Obtaining Chave Móvel Digital in Portugal for Non-Residents

The Chave Móvel Digital (CMD) is Portugal’s mobile digital key that allows secure access to online services and digital document signing. As a non-resident, you can also easily apply for it in person at a Loja do Cidadão in Portugal.

1. What You Need to Bring with you:

• A valid  international passport or EU ID card;

• Your Portuguese Tax Number (NIF);

• A mobile phone number (can be Portuguese or international, but must be active to receive SMS codes);

(Note: You do not need a Portuguese Citizen Card to request CMD as a foreigner.)

2. Where to Go:

• Visit a Loja do Cidadão (Citizen’s Shop). You can find them in most major cities (Lisbon, Porto, Cascais, etc.)

3. Step-by-Step Process:

  • Go to the CMD service desk inside the Loja do Cidadão;
  • Present your passport and NIF;
  • Provide your mobile phone number to be linked to CMD. The officer will register you and send an activation code by SMS.
  • You will be asked to set a PIN for CMD (this is your personal code).

4. After Activation

• You can log into official Portuguese portals (e.g. Portal das Finanças, SNS, Segurança Social Direta) with your mobile number + CMD PIN. You can also use CMD to digitally sign documents.

5. Cost

• The activation is free of charge.
